Commodity Manager NPI

Summary of Position

To manage all Procurement activity and requirements associated with NPI (IRAD & CRAD) and sustaining projects. Develop and manage project plans and identify / escalate all material constraints that effect delivery of projects to defined timescales.  Ensure compliance to the Procurement commodity strategy.

Main duties of this position
  • Procurement department lead in cross-functional project teams to support new bids, proposals and NPI (IRAD & CRAD) programs.
  • NPI BOM analysis for lead-time / risk assessment and to work across the Procurement team to mitigate the impact of long lead and obsolescence at the design stage of product development.
  • Produce red-line and risk registers for new projects to identify Procurement activity windows and risk to builds.
  • Ensure new projects leverage the incumbent supply chain where possible to support supply base consolidation projects and overall commodity strategy.
  • Lead supplier research, audits, selection in close liaison with the DO, Commodity Managers and SQA department for new Suppliers required on NPI activity. Co-ordinate the CSR activity/register for new and current suppliers related to IPT / NPI
  • Overall responsibility for the performance, development and mentoring of assigned personnel. The first point of escalation for supplier / issue resolution within NPI. Carry out performance reviews in line with business practices.
  • To support the commodity teams in the design and development of effective and agile supply chain solutions.
  • Escalate any constraints identified with supplier and/or deliveries related to NPI activity.
  • Leverage supplier and market intelligence to identify new business / technology opportunities. Initiate action plans to identify and mitigate commercial risk.
  • Procurement representative in the Product lifecycle and implementation program.
  • Maintain lead-time matrices for all key projects.
  • Review Draft BOM Amendments (DBA) impacts for NPI and advise Planning of impacts.
  • Support implementation of Lean supply chain principles such as JIT, Kan-Ban, VMI, DLF etc. in line with the companies overall manufacturing strategy.
  • Provide Procurement expertise across the business, and support execution of a common approach across all commodity groups.
  • Support supplier audits process for new and emerging suppliers identified within NPI processes.
  • Support development of commodity roadmap and vendor consolidation programs across the supply base.
  • Manage external BOM scrub agents to identify risk of obsolescence
  • Provide support to the Procurement department in contract / supply agreements negotiations.
  • Support the Sub-contracts Manager in make v buy decision making.
  • Produce weekly project reports for the Procurement Manager.
  • Support the preparation of quotations/tenders, analysis of supplier bids, and award of contracts.
  • Support the development and deployment of Procurement policies and processes, and ensure they are followed, with particular reference to ethical standards.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the Procurement Manager.
  • Proactively support company compliance to Health and Safety legislation through adherence to company polices, processes and practices.
  • Ensure that all business activity is conducted in line with company values, policies and ethics codes of conduct Undertake any other activity as reasonably requested by management.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • MCIP's qualified.
  • Recognised Engineering Degree.
  • High level of technical knowledge and aptitude in electronic/electro-mechanical commodity procurement techniques, including volume discounting, annual pricing agreements and lean supply.
  • Relevant experience in similar electronic manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to objectively assess a supplier as a key member of a strategic supplier audit team, with particular reference to commercial, business and supply capability skills.
  • Presenting professional supplier audit reports, with unbiased recommendations and/or corrective action plans.
  • Previously demonstrable success at introducing world class supply chain solutions through the use of Lean techniques.
  • Clear and concise understanding of NPI, with a track record of managing product and material/supplier transition from concept though NPI and successful launch into volume production.
  • Project management experience with and across multi-functional projects.
  • A self motivated team player able to operate with the minimum level of supervision and communicate clearly (both written and oral) with employees at all levels in a dynamic team environment.
  • Good facilitator and leader of individuals or groups.
  • Demonstrated ability work with design teams and project engineers.
  • The ability to engender respect in negotiation with current and potential vendors.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, high volume activity and establish priorities in a changing environment.
  • Working knowledge and experience of ERP systems, particularly MRPII.
  • Fluent ability to use MS Office/Project/Excel and Word.
