L3 TRL is a wholly owned UK subsidiary of L3 Technologies Inc, a US company.

Headquartered in New York City, L3T employs approximately 45,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aerospace systems and national security solutions. L3 is also a leading provider of a broad range of communication and electronic systems and products used on military and commercial platforms. The company reported 2014 sales of $12.1 billion.

TRL began as Telemetrix Research Limited which was founded in 1983 in Tewkesbury. Richtec acquired the company in 1988 and renamed it TRL Technology Ltd (TRL). Through funded research and development contracts for military, satellite communication companies and government customers, the company grew from a turnover of £1.1 million in 1988 to £5.8 million in 1997.

During this period, the company operated as a technology development organisation, focusing on externally funded research and development as its main source of revenue. TRL received a number of significant contracts and in 1997, a strategic decision was made to exploit commercially its accumulated technology by shifting emphasis towards designing and producing products and systems, whilst still conducting externally funded research and development.
