TRL is a wholly owned UK subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies Inc, a US company.

TRL began as Telemetrix Research Limited which was founded in 1983 in Tewkesbury. Richtec acquired the company in 1988 and renamed it TRL Technology Ltd (TRL). Through funded research and development contracts for military, satellite communication companies and government customers, the company grew from a turnover of £1.1 million in 1988 to £5.8 million in 1997.

During this period, the company operated as a technology development organisation, focusing on externally funded research and development as its main source of revenue. TRL received a number of significant contracts and in 1997, a strategic decision was made to exploit commercially its accumulated technology by shifting emphasis towards designing and producing products and systems, whilst still conducting externally funded research and development.

History of TRL Technology

The company floated on the AIM in July 2004 as TRL Electronics plc. In August 2006 TRL Electronics plc was acquired by L3 Communications and TRL was re-branded L3 TRL Technology. The legal UK registered name of the company is still TRL Technology Limited.
