TRL’s Education Partnership Results in ‘Best Idea’ Award for Drone Defence Project

A team of Tewkesbury School sixth-form students and engineers from L3 TRL Technology have won a ‘best idea’ award for designing a portable device to detect and identify drones.

The team successfully created a prototype system that could identify and take down Wi-Fi drones, with the students understanding the principles and methods that could be used for all radio frequency drones and applying these against a remote-controlled car at a lower frequency.

The award, sponsored by Rolls Royce, was presented at the Engineering Development Trust’s south west region assessment day at the University of Bath.

The six-month project was part of TRL’s involvement in the EDT's Engineering Education Scheme (EES) which offers ‘real life’ STEM projects to young people aged 16-17, working with and experiencing local companies.

Students from Tewkesbury School who took part in the EES scheme were supported by TRL engineers who mentored them in technical skills and approaches to develop their project. The project topic was set by TRL and enabled the students to enhance their skills and apply knowledge gained from their school studies to the world of work.

Byron Price, Corporate Social Responsibility lead for TRL, said: “Initiatives like the Engineering Education Scheme are crucial in bridging the skills gap and demonstrating to young people, through using real world experiences, that a career in engineering is rewarding and makes a difference. It’s important for companies like TRL to foster links between industry and education so we can ensure that future recruits have the right skills, understanding and experience to meet industry needs, and it enables us as a company to engage with our local community”.


As well as participating in the Engineering Education Scheme, TRL is a member of the government’s CyberFirst programme designed to boost the cyber skills capabilities of the UK’s future and current workforce and the CyberInvest programme through which the company sponsors a number of PhD students and provides independent review of academic courses and qualifications to ensure they meet the requirements of industry.
